The Salkantay trail is an ancient and remote alternative path to the Inca Trail, it has much more spectacular views and with different ecological levels we will walk between lagoons, impressive snow-capped mountains such as Salkantay and Humantay, crossing rivers and subtropical areas of abundant vegetation and fauna. This road is an excellent option for those who want to escape from the most congested routes and in a faster way, or for those who are looking for an alternative when the spaces of the traditional Inca Trail are occupied.
This impressive excursion passes under the magnificent Salkantay mountain (6,710 m / 22,014 ft), one of the highest and most impressive of the Peruvian Andes. Its first two days will be dominated by the impressive snow-capped mountains of Salkantay and Humantay, as it travels through the high Andean landscape. The third day will descend to the warm cloud forest, to reach Machu Picchu Pueblo on the fourth day. The impressive sacred citadel of the Incas Machu Picchu is visited during the last day of the program.
This excursion is an interesting alternative for those who have not found space on the route from the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu. Every year, on the north side of the Ausangate, the festival of Quyllur Rit’i (Quechua: star snow) is celebrated before the feast of Corpus Christi, during which thousands of Quechua pilgrims go to the Lord of Quyllur Rit’i in the church from Sinakara.
In addition, in the snowy Ausangate is a geographical feature, also known as Vinicunca or Rainbow Mountain by its name in English.
The Inca Trail is the most sought after in Cusco. Permits are limited every year (around 200). It almost always fills up from March to September. The only way to carry out the route is to hire a tour operator or company.
Machu Picchu hike is 39 km of route. The longest road starts at Piscacucho (km 82) of the railway line towards Machu Picchu. It goes through different ecosystems, colossal archaeological sites and places rich in flora and fauna, until reaching the citadel of Machu Picchu.
On the Machu Picchu trek, the walker will find a network of carved granite settlements along the way (Huiñay Huayna, Puyupatamarca), immersed in natural settings.
As an ideal complement, the tourist will also find an exuberant nature, with unique landscapes, hundreds of species of orchids and multicolored birds.
